What’s the Octopus got to do with Steampunk?

The Octopus is a symbol of Steampunk for many reasons. Giant octopi appear In Jewels Vern’s 2,000 Leagues Under The Sea, considered a steampunk piece of literature penned in the nineteenth century.

The Octopus was also a symbol used as a logotype by the innovators of the Industrial Revolution. This is especially true of the builders of the railroads, where the Octopus’s tentacles represent the spreading branches of the railroads across the country and continents. 

Likewise, with their sprawling networks, the railroads were seen as a monster, again represented by the humble Octopus, taking over their fertile lands.

The Octopus looks Steampunk, with its large round head and bulging eyes that give the appearance of wearing goggles.
